Medical Exam Requirements for Spousal Sponsorship in Canada
Share
In this post, we'll break down who needs a medical exam, what it involves, how to prepare, and why it's an important part of the spousal sponsorship process.
What Is a Medical Exam for Canadian Immigration?
A medical exam for Canadian immigration is a health check required by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Its purpose is to ensure that the sponsored spouse or partner does not pose a public health risk and won't place excessive demand on Canada’s health care system.
Who Needs to Take the Medical Exam for Canadian Immigration?
If you are being sponsored as a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner under the Family Class or Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class, you must complete an immigration medical exam.
This requirement applies regardless of whether you're applying from within or outside Canada.
In addition, any dependent children included in your application must also complete a medical exam, even if they are not accompanying you to Canada.
When to Get the Medical Exam
There are two main options:
-
Upfront Medical Exam: You can complete your medical exam before submitting your sponsorship application. This is called an “upfront medical.”
-
Wait for IRCC Request: Alternatively, you can wait for IRCC to contact you and provide instructions after you’ve submitted your application. This is the most common route.
Both approaches are valid, but upfront medical exams are only valid for a limited amount of time and may need to be redone if your application is not processed within that timeframe.
What the Medical Exam Includes
The medical exam is conducted by a panel physician approved by IRCC. You cannot visit your family doctor for this exam unless they are on the list of approved doctors.
Here’s what to expect:
-
Physical exam (eyes, hearing, heart, lungs, etc.)
-
Chest X-ray (for tuberculosis screening)
-
Blood tests (for HIV and syphilis)
-
Urine tests
The doctor may ask about your medical history and current medications. Depending on your age and risk factors, additional tests may be required.
How Much Does the Medical Exam Cost?
The cost can vary by country and clinic, but it generally ranges from CAD $200 to $500 per person. This fee is paid directly to the panel physician and is not covered by IRCC or included in your sponsorship application fee.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
-
Valid ID (passport or government-issued ID)
-
Eyeglasses or contact lenses if you wear them
-
Any medical reports or prescriptions you may have
-
IRCC medical form (if you've received one)
- Four recent passport-sized photos (if required by the clinic)
Each clinic has its own procedures and requirements so be sure to ask for specifics when scheduling your appointment.
What Happens After the Exam?
The panel physician will send the results directly to IRCC. You’ll receive a document confirming the exam, which you should include in your application if you did the exam upfront.
Medical exams are valid for 12 months, so be sure your exam is still valid by the time a decision is made on your application. If your application takes longer, IRCC may ask you to redo the medical exam.
Why Is the Medical Exam Important for Canadian Immigration?
The medical exam ensures that new immigrants don’t pose a risk to public health and helps IRCC make informed decisions. If a health condition is discovered, it does not automatically result in refusal, especially in family sponsorship cases, where medical inadmissibility rules are less strict than in economic immigration programs.
IRCC typically does not refuse spousal sponsorships based on medical grounds unless the applicant poses a significant risk to public health or safety.
